THE BEST GIFT
‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.’ John 3 v 16
I LOVE giving and receiving gifts.
I would say that it is definitely one of my primary ways of showing and receiving love. (See The Five love languages by Gary Chapman.) When someone gives you a gift, it shows that they have thought about you when you are not around and that they know you well enough to give you something that you will love. It shows generosity and care.
The sad fact is though, that I can get more excited over gifts of a material nature than the everlasting gift that has been given to me by God. The gift God gave us in the form of Jesus is multi-faceted. It is Jesus the person, God the Father, The Holy Spirit, Salvation, abundant life and the promise of Heaven…and so much more! A little bit more of a big deal than a nice piece of jewelry or a bunch of flowers.
Here’s the thing: Our inability to comprehend just how great heaven is going to be should in no way diminish what God did in sending us His Son so that we can experience it. Jesus sacrificed the majesty of Heaven to come down to earth and pay a brutal price so that we wouldn’t have to pay it, to reconnect us to the Father and buy for us abundant life.
So when someone gives you a gift this Christmas, be grateful but also be reminded that God so loved us that he gave us the best gift of all – Jesus.
